Tips on sending premaster file
Congratulations on finishing your track! Now, let’s take it to the next level and make it shine.
While it’s true that the mastering stage can correct some areas, it’s not the place to fix major issues. The purpose of mastering is to enhance the great work you’ve already done, not to fix mistakes. As the saying goes, “you can’t polish a turd.” So, let’s focus on highlighting the strengths of your track and making it sound its best.
My advice is simple: if the bottom end of your track sounds muffled or boomy (and you don’t want it to), it’s best to revisit the mixdown stage and correct it there before sending it to be mastered. Here are some tips for sending a well-mixed premaster file to be mastered:
Please Do:
- Try to get the best mix on Levels and Stereo Field before exporting your Premaster file
- Leave the Master Fader at 0dB
- Leave some headroom – my rule of thumb is about -6dB (Peak Level) or -16dB (RMS) should do it
- Ideally, export your Premaster as a 24-Bit and 44,100Hz Sample Rate WAV file. The best rule to follow here is, if you created your recordings/tracks at 24 Bit, then export the Premaster at 24 Bit also. If you created your recordings/tracks at 48 Bit, then export your Premaster file at this rate also.
Please Do Not:
- Do not put anything on the Master Channel. For example, please do not leave any of these on the Master channel when exporting:
- Limiters
- Compressors
- Gates
- EQ’s
- Saturators
- Stereo Width FX
- Do not normalise when exporting
- Do not export with Dither set to On (I only do this if I am exporting to a lower Bit Rate. For example, if you record your tracks at 48 Bit and export the premaster at 48 Bit, I would likely create a master at 24/16 Bit – in this case I would use dithering)
- Do not send your Premaster file as an MP3
Tips on sending stems for mixing
As mentioned above, the best way to get a great sounding master is to first get the best mix you can before sending for mastering.
When checking your mixdown against reference tracks, it is worth considering the following:
- Individual track levels
- Stereo width
- Depth
Please Do:
- Leave the Master Fader at 0dB
- Leave some headroom for the master channel (see images below) – my rule of thumb is about -6dB (Peak Level) or -16dB (RMS) should do it
- Ideally, export your Stems as a 24-Bit and 45kHz /44,1kHz Sample Rate WAV file. The best rule to follow here is, if you created your recordings/tracks at 24 Bit, then export the Stems at 24 Bit also. If you created your recordings/tracks at 48 Bit, then export your Stem files at this rate also.
- Remove any of the following processing (unless its used for sound design purposes) to allow more flexibility:
- Limiters
- Compressors
- Gates
- EQ’s
- Saturators
- Stereo Width FX
